Supervisory Firefighter
This is a National Guard Title 5 Excepted Service position. This National Guard position is for a Supervisory Firefighter, Position Description Number T6307000 and is part of the MD 175th ANG, National Guard.
Opening and closing dates: 07/12/2025 to 07/26/2025
Salary: $69,923 - $90,898 per year

This position is open to On-Board Federal Employees of the Maryland National Guard only. Applicants must submit current copies of their SF-50 to verify eligibility.
Duties include:
- Providing immediate oversight and direction of day-to-day operations at a fire station for an assigned shift.
- Supervising two or more crews.
- Planning and assigning work to be accomplished.
- Coordinating with chiefs on other shifts and at other stations concerning matters of work accomplishment, training, priorities, and procedures.
- Providing recommendations to higher levels of supervision for appointment, promotion, retention, and reassignment of employees.
- Identifying developmental and training needs of station personnel.
- Hearing and resolving employee complaints, and referring the more serious complaints and group grievances to supervisor for resolution.
- Scheduling and granting leave.
- Directing and participating in practice drills and training classes for assigned station.
- Recommending appropriate recognition and feedback for employee performance and contributions.
- Ensuring employees maintain appropriate certifications.
- Supporting the agency's EEO program through allocation of personnel to participate in community outreach and recruitment programs, ensuring full cooperation of employees with EEO office officials.
- Preparing reports for the supervisor concerning fire runs, training, maintenance, inspections, or other topics.
- Performing special assignments/projects as required by the supervisor.
- Supervising and participating in the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Firefighter Certification System for the station.
- Directing the operation of firefighting vehicles.
- Directing crews to the scene of the fire following a predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary.
- Supervising positioning of firefighting vehicles considering factors such as wind direction, rescue, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, and location of armament on aircraft.
- Taking charge of all firefighting activities at the scene in the absence of the Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief.
- Directing the operation of pumps, turrets, extended waterways, ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment.
- Determining proper pressures, the number of lines, and relays requirements to the booster pumper.
- Maneuvering vehicle to keep the fire in optimum range.
- Maintaining constant awareness of levels in self-contained tanks.
- Directing the training of other firefighters on driving vehicles and operating equipment.
- Supervising the performance of crash-rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling complex aircraft.
- Aircraft carry large volumes of fuel, conventional and sometimes nuclear weapons, and/or highly flammable or explosive cargo.
- Maintaining constant awareness of the frequent changes in cockpit design, ordinance placement, and cabin layouts to determine how they affect the difficulty of rescue and firefighting.
- Directing the application of water through turrets, extended waterways, and handlines to cool weapons and ammunitions during rescue, and operation or deactivation of specialized mechanisms and systems such as hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, or oxygen supply systems.
- Sometimes using special tools developed for the particular mechanism.
- Performing standby duty during aircraft refueling and defueling, engine maintenance and testing, welding and burning on fueled and/or armed aircraft, ammunition handling or other special circumstances.
- Supervising the performance of structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes; hazardous materials (HAZMAT) containment and control duties; and/or Basic Life Support duties.
- Performing prefire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems.
- Supervising firefighters in performing Basic Life Support and/or HAZMAT technician containment and control duties.
- May assist in the development of special protective services for structures imposing extreme hazards.
- Supervising employees in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants.
- Supervising the rescue of personnel and immediate first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility.
- Using direct pressure and/or tourniquets to stop bleeding, checking windpipe for obstructions, performing CPR, and/or providing other appropriate assistance.
- Directing and participating in regular training and exercises as required.
- Supervising the maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
- Directing and/or demonstrating functional tests and inspections.
- Directing/demonstrating preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with facilities.
- Complying with health, safety, security, and environmental rules and procedures and performing work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.
- Ensuring federal, state, and local protection/prevention ordinances and building codes concerning health, safety, security, and the environment are strictly adhered to.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements include:
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

- Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
- The employee is required to work a 44hr pay period 48/72 hour week on a 24 hour on, 24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays.
- May be subject to recall.
- This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle.
- An appropriate, valid driver's license is required.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
- This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration.
- This designation will not exceed 14calendar days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by the TAG.
- May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).
- Employee is required to be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System as Fire Officer II(includes Fire Officer I), Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter Iand II), and HAZMAT Incident Commander (includes HAZMAT Awareness and HAZMAT Operations).
- Maryland or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic

- 10-Point Veterans' Preference: You MUST submit a signed SF-15, "Application for 10-Point Veterans' Preference" plus the proof as required by the SF-15.
- 5-Point Veterans' Preference: You MUST submit a copy of your DD-214 which includes Character of Service (usually Member-4 copy).
- If you are currently active duty, you may submit written documentation (certification) from your branch of service certifying that you are expected to be discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions no later than 120 days after the date the certification is signed. The certification should also include when your terminal leave will begin, your rank and dates of active duty service.
